KDM login fails the first time after reboot, it accepts the passwd and starts the login procedure, but then drops me back to login. However, the second and all other attempts are successful. It might releated to the recent hal update, I found a bugreport on the Debian bugtracker:http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=561460
in my errors.log:
Dec 19 23:11:57 adeehost kdm: :0[2127]: Client start failed
Dec 19 23:11:57 adeehost kdm: :0[2127]: Cannot close ConsoleKit session: Unable to close session: no session open
Dec 19 23:11:58 adeehost kdm_greet[3384]: Cannot load /usr/share/apps/kdm/faces/.default.face: No such file or directory

I have identical problem after hal upgrade today. I then downgraded hal back to prior version and problem disappeared.

I confirm to have the exactly the same problem. First login gave problems (even before I reached KDM my kernel put out lots of strange messages). After second login it was ok. But I decided to downgrade hal anyway.

Update to consolekit 0.4.1-2 and it should work fine again. The hal update to 0.5.14 uncovered a bug in consolekit.

You're right, the consolekit update solved the problem
