Hello. I have a fresh install of Arch and I have installed GDM. I start it from inittab. When GDM starts I can write my username and password but nothing happens. I am greeted with a dialog that tells me the hostname of my computer but no user. This is strange because I did an install with the same setup on another computer a week ago and that runs flawlessly. I'm totally lost here. I can't use shutdown button either. Same with that. Nothing happens. The dialog stays there and I have to reboot because when shifting to another virtual console I can't see the process witt ps -a and killall gdm or x doesn't stop it and I'm not able to startx from that console because x is already running.

Update to consolekit 0.4.1-2 and it should work fine again. The hal update to 0.5.14 uncovered a bug in consolekit.

I've been having the same problem on my desktop. No login for my regular user, only the host is visible...furthermore no automounting external disks anymore, and no logout possible from within gnome.
Both on an existing install and a new one that I did after this problem occurred ( I could work around the problem, but with quite some hazzles ).
Am at work now, but will try the consolekit solution tonight...
Btw, this seems like a pretty big issue to me. Aren't there more users experiencing this thing?

Maybe you could open your eyes and read further than the topic title. This has been fixed in an update, as posted in multiple topics now.

Why so annoyed?

Because some people don't read before they post. There's several identical threads about this problem, and still people keep posting about it while a fix is already available.

Hey, thanks, JGC! Fixed my problem !

Thank you, JGC. My problem was that in addition to the main issue my Polish mirror was not up-to-date. So consolekit 0.4.1-2 was and still is unavailable. Changing a mirror has helped.
