The wildebeest is an ungulate (ung /gnu - ulate) or hooved mammal... It is a little known fact that RMS spent many years in sub-Saharan Africa where he completed some doctoral research into the genus Connochaetes. The result is a small, now sadly out of print, monograph titled 'Mitochondrial Mutations in Miscellaneous Bovidae.' It is well worth the read...
