Ok, I am willing to bet there is a Wiki for this so if there is please direct me to it. I used to use Fedora and whenever I plugged in my usb drive or a portable hard drive or a sd card it would automatically pick up on it. With Arch when I plug in these devices phonon shows that it connected but I have to manually mount the device. Also devices such as my logitec usb headset does not work at all. As I said if there is a wiki for this please direct me to it but I would really like the plug and play ability I once had.
I understand it completely, grappled hopelessly with comprehension, balanced on the edge of insanity for an eternity.....a moment.

I should have added that CDs and DVDs do not automount either.

A little more information might speed this process up: what DE/WM you are using, the file manager, any error messages etc... otherwise anonymous_user's helpful links are probably as much as anyone can assist with.

Ok, I am using KDE4. When I plug in a device it shows up as connected but when i click on it it says it is not mounted so I have to manually mount it from terminal. no other errors that I know about.

I am probably totally wrong (I don't use KDE4), but isn't that a "feature" of Dolphin?
I found this on the KDE forums:
For the automount, try Add widgets -> Install new widgets -> Download new plasma widgets -> and install -- New device notifier with automount

I will look into that, thanks
