Reboot hangs

Hi all,

My first ever post here! I am just starting out with Arch, giving it a go on two older Toshiba laptops. I am studying hard in the Wiki and the Forums, but I can't find an answer to this problem:

On the Toshiba S1800-514, when I reboot, the system shuts down, but then it hangs... I have to manually switch it off and on again. No biggie, but still... I am not sure whether this is 'good' for the system.
On the other laptop, also a Toshiba, the Tecra 8100, this does not happen.

Okay, 25 views, presumably by people having the same problem, hoping to find answers. Is the answer to my problem too obvious to dignify a response by experienced arch users or is it too difficult to tackle? Should I provide more information and if so, what? I hope someone will help, or at least point me to places where I might find clues.

I had a slowdown on my system on shutdown because it would clear /tmp and take ages at doing it.

I just tmpfs for /tmp now and no more problems ;-)

have a look at the wiki article for tmpfs.

Could be a acpi issue. Did you enable acpi in the bios? Do you load the acpi daemon?

Thanks for the replies!

I added the line for tmpfs in/etc/fstab, right under 'none':

tmpfs    /tmp   tmpfs  defaults    0 0

but that doesn't make any difference. The screen still turns black after it says "Restarting system"

As to the BIOS: I pressed ESC during boot, then F1 and got System Setup, only two pages. It says on top ACPI BIOS version 1.78.
I can't find any settings for ACPI, though.

(I have the feeling that there should be more...)

Anyhow, when Arch boots, there is a line that says: "loading standard ACPI modules".
I have added acpi to the Deamons lne in /etc/rc.conf, but to no avail.

Another thing I note at the end of the boot process is a line that says (roughly)

"error in line 200... functions.... /etc/rc.d/acpi/mdnsd ... no such file"

I have looked at the 'functions' file in /etc/rc.d, but it doesn't mention 'acpi' or 'mdnsd' anywhere.

Maybe it is BIOS-related, since it happens at the very moment when Arch surrenders control to the system (but maybe I'm just guessing...)

I hope I have been able to make myself clear and thanks again, also for new ideas!

The same here with an A8N-SLI motherboard. It worked until some upgrade, I think.

Are you able to see output when you power off? Might show where it's hanging.

In my case I only get a black screen after the normal power off (as it might be, but my computer is still on).

This is a known issue with the 1800 series (at least the Toshiba America models,
and probably yours too). The original ACPI BIOS had problems communicating with
any ACPI enabled operating system. The situation wasn't helped by the fact that
the 1800 series uses a desktop CPU chip which are designed to shut down if they
get too hot. This was fixed (for about 95% of the cases) on the US models by a
BIOS update (currently 2.10 for the US models)....

Different problem, but the second sentence suggests it may be responsible?
I don't know if the BIOS is available on the Toshiba website, but it might be worth a look.

I've experienced similar issues with a Thinkpad T500.  It wouldn't actually hang after reboot, however POST would take 20-30mins, so it would only appear to hang.  Enabling IDE Compatibility Mode in the BIOS fixed this, though it BSOD'd Windows.  (I suggested how to fix that, but the owner didn't like it. )

Since switching from ndiswrapper to the new rtl8192se_pci wireless driver, there've been no problems. Strange.

I had a same issue with Thinkpad T400 too. It would hang before loading BIOS after rebooting, I think it has something related to ACPI, since after upgraded some acpi packages it's gone and haven't happened for a while.
