I'm finding the same issue, same version of Arch 64. I can only log in to the system graphically as root, but all other users fail. I also now have the boot process asking me for a runlevel instead of automatically going to 5.

I have resolved my issue.......
i believe the problem was..... the latest upgrades to arch rendered my installed nvidia driver hopeless..... im not sure whether it was due to a xorg update, or a kernel update.... to be honest.. i didn't really look at what was being upgraded... i blindly upgraded.... let that be a lesson........ but i believe that the latest xorg broke my nvidia driver....
i simply downloaded the latest nvidia driver from the website, and installed it via console...... and everything worked again as it should.............
its a bit disapointing that an upgrade can break your system so easily.... but then again.... i guess this is the bleeding edge world..... if you want the latest updates.... be prepared to fix any issues that occur.............
well.... i hope this helps anybody else........... i downloaded the latest nvidia for my card using a seperate distro installed, placed it in my arch home folder, and installed it........ and everything now works..........
goodluck
