Re Arch live cd problems

Hi,
   Merry Xmas
Tried the Arch live install and it worked with an XFCE desktop.
We seem stuck with that as both  KDE and Gnome cannot be installed as they give errors after downloading
everything and this is perhaps intentional I do not know.
Try as I might there was no console login to try and install under init 3 as in sidux.
Guess one day I will have to try the hard old Arch way when I have gallons of time.
The live cd is not bad, but the Arch version of firefox shiretoko refuses to look at some websites  eg Seamonkey Releases, and
the cups printer configuration for some reason
There also seems to be no Arch package for seamonkey 2.01.
Hope some kind soal with a bit of Xmas cheer can help.
But perhaps there is none, and we must wait for Chakra to mature.

Happy new year

Is there a question in there?  Or do you not actually want help?

Re: Re Arch live cd problems

My best advice would be to point you to http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewforum.php?id=30,it is the other languages forum and you might be able to get more help there. As to your apparent problems:
What are the errors you get when trying to install KDE and Gnome? Please post them here so we can help you further. It could be a problem with your mirror, I suggest commenting out a new one in the mirrorlist file. The problem is not intentional, I have all three and more installed right now.
My Shiretoko visits the SeaMonkey releases page just fine. Does yours not load, or have some other error? Try running it from the terminal and looking at its output when you try to go to that page.
I have no idea about the CUPS configuration thing.
There is a seamonkey package, and it is version 2.01 in the extra repo.

One other bit of advice. if you have problems with Chakra you should visit their forums at http://chakra-project.org/bbs/

Re: Re Arch live cd problems

Many thanks for replying guys
Here is what I did, and the consequent frusty error after all that
By the way I come from a Debian world,  sidux and Lenny, do you have an eqivalent
/etc/apt/sources.list
for your repos

Where did the conflicting files come from, this was a fresh install.
though I did update the live cd install beforehand
Do I have to delete these conflicting files and maybe mre I wonder?
Many Thanx
Cheers

Re: Re Arch live cd problems

If /etc/apt/sources.list is what I think it is, then there is /etc/pacman.conf for pacman. You'll want to look at http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pacman and search on the wiki for other information about pacman. The wiki is an amazing resource.
Just a note, if you need to post something that long again it is recommended that you use some external service like pastebin, or at the least put code tags around it.
Were you using the Chakra CD or Godane's LiveCD or something else entirely?
About those errors, it looks like pacman lost track of those files for some reason. There are two way to resolve that, either move the files somewhere safe to make sure that everything works OK with the newly installed version. Or, if you know that it's OK to overwrite them you can use the -f option to overwrite files. Since they're just wallpapers, it's probably OK to use the -f option in this case. You should read this post about it though, as it could be very dangerous: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56373.
Also note that it is not advised to use -Sy to install new packages. If you want the latest, you should -Syu and then -S just the ones you want to install newly.
Are you doing this from the live CD?

Re: Re Arch live cd problems

Hi jac,
the -f setting allowed KDE to install, many thanx.
However Xfce4 has no desktop option setting on thr Arch Live cd install.
So I wonder how to get KDE to run, and have the 2x desktops as options
in the Arch live cd install
All the best and
compliments of the season
Cheers

Re: Re Arch live cd problems

Which "Arch Live cd install" are you using? The official one has no options by default. I'm guessing that whatever you installed from has a login manager installed for you already, if this is the case, I suggest you go to the wiki. I haven't used a login manager for a long time, but I'm guessing the relavent pages for you would be on xfce, gnome, KDE, whatever it is you're trying to use right now.
I thought that xfce migt have it's own login manager, but from a cursory glance on the wiki it doesn't. In that case, does it go straight to the xfce desktop, is that the problem you're having? If that is the case, you probably want a display manager, in which case look up the wiki page for that.

In all honesty, you don't need "gallons" of time to install Arch the official way. If you follow the Beginners' Guide, you shouldn't have any serious problems. If you do that, it walks you through installing whichever desktop environment you want as well.
