[Solved] External disk randomly unmounts

I've already had similar problem to this, but I've solved through updates and not tweaking it... (the original post)
But I still have some random problems with my external disk. I think it started with wrong mounting...
So I formatted it hoping this will take care of it. But still sometimes it just make a strange noise, like spark and then "unmounts" it self.
It's WD My Passport 320GB and I've formatted it in NTFS as I'm not a sole user of it.

I'm starting to fear it's a technical problem...
I think it happens only under heavy usage like copying big files/folders to and from it...
Any help would be welcomed...
I kind of need it as I'm going to change my computer soon and I wish to back-up files on this external disk, so I need it not to shut-off when a lot of files are being copied to it.

Re: [Solved] External disk randomly unmounts

Maybe it was just a USB port. Could it be??
I've changed the port and so far so good...

Yep, that would make sense - happened to me before on an internal usb port. I took the machine apart, had a look and the port was loose.

Anyway, good luck smile

This issue may be connected with 'sleeping state', when your hard disk turning off after idle.
Check this out. dmesg and syslog should help you.

Thanks I'll keep that in mind. But it makes no sense that it would get in sleeping state during heavy use (ie copying a lot of files...).
I think it was the usb port, as I changed the port and it worked just fine...

I've seen this behavior before too, and it only happened under heavy usage, for me it usually means that the enclosure+power supply are getting unreliable.

Maybe it is a bad usb port but it's still very strange because the only thing I need to do sometimes was cycle the power of the enclosure and everything worked fine, I didn't even touch the usb cable or move the enclosure.
