tiv: terminal image viewer

Project page: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/projects/tiv

The subject says it all. This is an image viewer that displays the image directly in the terminal by (ab)using ANSI terminal colors. It can adapt the palette to the image to make the most of the available color space.

There are some example images on the project page and in this directory.

I had never heard of cacaview but from the man page it seems far more capable than this is. Considering that ascii art is older than the internet itself, I'm sure that there are many others too. As I state on the info page though, this is a coding byproduct and not a deliberate application. It really was one of those "hmmm, I bet this function could be used to do that"... *experimentation*... "hehe, it works" kind of things.

Re: tiv: terminal image viewer

Just bumping to say that there have been some interesting updates in the last few days. It can now combine it's own adaptive palette functionality with ascii output from jp2a. You can get some nice results if you have a transparent terminal and a dark background. Here's an example: http://xyne.archlinux.ca/img/tiv/psychadelic_cat.png (2.4 MB png file).

Btw, I still can't figure out how to get libcaca to use truecolor (or anything beyond the 16 basic ansi colors). sad
