Strange X error prevents from starting new applications

Hello
I recently have this after a while when logged in in KDE (4.4 beta).

~ >> kate
No protocol specified
kate: cannot connect to X server :0

The desktop is running normally, firefox for example is still alive but I cannot start any new application. Trying to start kmail tells my something like this:

~ >> kmail
No protocol specified
kmail: cannot connect to X server :0
<unknown program name>(3924)/: Communication problem with "kmail" , it probably crashed.
Error message was: "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply" : " "Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)" "

It is not related to Qt or KDE apps, all Gtk apps do not start either. There is also no error in any of the logfiles. This is the latest installed packages:

Would be helpful if anyone else experienced something like this. I am suspecting the GL upgrade.
The computer is a HP Compaq 6710s notebook.
