Xorg support for widescreen monitor

Hello,

My faithful 17" viewsonic finally ran out of steam. So I'm in market for a new monitor. Currently looking at a 22" one that does 1680x1050. TBH, I don't have full confidence in Xorg's support of widescreen formats such as this. I'm temporarily using a DVI TV that supports 1280x720 but could not configure X for that output.

Please let me know your experience with this and any trick to get it working so that I can go ahead with the purchase.

I'm just guessing here, but I have the feeling that what resolutions you are going to be able to output depends more on the graphics card than on the monitor. I'm running my widescreen laptop with 1280x800 here and no problems at all (nvidia card and drivers).

I need a sorted list of all random numbers, so that I can retrieve a suitable one later with a binary search instead of having to iterate through the generation process every time.

Yeah, let us know what your GPU is. And if it's supported by your GPU, for a monitor that size you may want to consider something that has 1920x1080 resolution.

I have a nVidia 8200 chipset. It's a Asus barebone that has an HDMI output so I'd presume that the hardware does support wide screen.

My Samsung widescreen monitor, nvidia graphics card, and xorg have been playing nicely together for several years now.  I'd second skottish's suggestion to go with a monitor capable of 1920x1080 resolution if possible.

Thanks for the input. I might pay a bit of extra and get the higher resolution alright.
