Decided to Re-enable KMS

When Kernel 2.6.31 was first released to Core, I installed it and configured it to run with KMS.  I guess the drivers weren't ready at the time, because my system slowed to a crawl.  So I disabled KMS.

After a recent massive update I ran (I waited a couple of weeks because I knew that updating to KDE 4.3.3, X Server 1.7, and the latest Mesa and ATI drivers all at the same time could be dangerous), I lost hardware rendering on my Radeon Xpress 1100.  Rather than roll back -- because again, I'm not sure what the source of the problem is -- I decided to see how KMS was doing.

In short, it works a lot better than it did, and I like it.

Now I just need to get back hardware rendering...

*Goes back to mindlessly switching VTs for giggles.*

Re: Decided to Re-enable KMS

Fixed the software rendering issue.  Once I added my user account to the "video" group, it can load the hardware drivers.

So I take it from that change that the latest whatever-package-I-updated (probably either x server or the mesa bits) no longer loads the video driver as root.

Re: Decided to Re-enable KMS

You said KMS was working a lot better but you hadn't even loaded the hardware drivers? Does this mean you had KMS working without the radeon module loaded? Is this even possible? What is your glxgears framerate?

Great things come in tar.xz packages.

The module was loaded.  The hardware driver would fail going into X so it fell back to software rendering.

Re: Decided to Re-enable KMS

Whenever that happens to me, it's because I'm not using the right versions of mesa and xf86-video-ati. Could you post your Xorg.0.log so I can be sure?
