Ok, I have been through the install 4 times and still no dice. I prefer lilo to grub so no posts convincing me to switch. Anyhow, what should the "boot = " entry be pointed at? Does that designate the install location? I am using my entire 40GB HDD for Arch with a 9 GB /, 800MB swap and the other 30+ GB to /home. Everytime I install lilo I point it towards /dev/discs0/disc0/disc. I am kinda lost because my old slack lilo keeps popping up. Thanks in advance for your help.

i use grub and have the same problem. To make grub load i'm installed in /dev/discs0/disc0/disc1.

weird, maybe some of the Gurus (or moderators) know what we are doing wrong.

Hmm... have you tried:
boot=/dev/hda1
or
boot=/dev/sda1
?

I was under the impression that we had to use the "boot=/dev/discs0/disc0/disc" designation. Is this not true?

If you want GRUB to install a boot menu in the MBR, you must tell grub
to install to a disk, not to a partition, ie :
/dev/hda for example or /dev/discs/disc0
and NOT
/dev/hda1 or /dev/discs/disc0/part1
You could also chroot in the installation and go to the grub mini-bash-like shell :
# grub
grub> root (hd0,x) # path to your /boot partition
grub> setup (hdx) # where to install the boot menu
grub> quit

Yep.
Sorry. I had the feeling it was root=..., not boot=...
