VLMC: VideoLAN Movie Creator

A new Linux video editing software has appeared from the creators of VLC media player. Although a pre-release version is not available yet, I have high hopes for this, considering my iffy results from other Linux video editors.
What are your thoughts on this?

Re: VLMC: VideoLAN Movie Creator

I'd be interested in seeing how user friendly it is while staying able to do high level editing. I am excited for such an already-proven-to-be-highly-competent team to tackle video editing, which seems to be lacking IMHO in Linux in terms of usability/versatility. That said, I haven't checked on any progress on the video-editing front in two years.

Re: VLMC: VideoLAN Movie Creator

By now it doesn't compile even with vlc-git, I left an incomplete pkgbuild at http://pastebin.com/m6e82f4be

I'm pumped about it.

I will be installing it as soon as I hear it will compile.

With a patch now compiles, it still requires the git version of vlc.

They have a long history of failing to support mkv, H.264 and subtitles.
Doesn't mean this will be bad though smile Gonna try it when it matures a little.

I'm excited about this. I have only come across bad video editors with nothing but problems.

Re: VLMC: VideoLAN Movie Creator

The biggest competitors seem to be Kdenlive and PiTiVi (the latter has commercial funding, making it very promising).
It will be interesting to watch these editors develop...  Hopefully the competition will spur on a ton of improvement in a short amount of time big_smile
My only opinion is that I hope Kdenlive doesn't pull ahead to the exclusion of the others, because I prefer not to use a DE.

I don't mention Cinelerra because while it's pretty much the best GNU/Linux video editor around right now, it and its forks do not appear to be recieving much in way of development.

Re: VLMC: VideoLAN Movie Creator

Srsly guys? You wont install a piece of software, just because youd have to install a few dependencies that take a few MiB of Space? That only take up ram if the app is running? Thats just ridiculous..

Re: VLMC: VideoLAN Movie Creator

nice. My favorites are lives (powerfull) and kdenlive (easy).
This one looks promising!

The only reason I can imagine why you do not want to install extra dependancies is because it uses bandwidth when updating. But just put it in Ignorepkg then! Disk space is cheap these days, and it's not that big. You don't need to load it on startup. And KDE has some very good apps!
I use openbox, but have kde installed, gtk installed, no gnome there is nothing I need in it.

I'd rather not be pulling in GNOME or KDE if I don't run those, yes.
Don't put words in my mouth -- nowhere did I say I wouldn't install it period.  I'm not an absolutist.
