Well I guess they are .mpg files. They are extracted from dvd .iso. "file [file] says "RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 720 x 576, 25.00 fps, video:, audio: Dolby AC3 (stereo, 48000 Hz)". And when I try to play them, I only hear audio, and VLC says "VLC does not support the audio or video format " ". Unfortunately there is no way for you to fix this.".
I have tried to compile VLC from source, but that didn't help. And I think I have all kind of libraries installed VLC version is 1.0.4, but earlier versions didn't work either.

Well, just try mplayer and a gui for it. It solved me some problems with codecs not supported in VLC.

I know that this is an older post, but extracted from a dvd.iso and AVI container at 25fps tell two different stories. This video has been re-encoded into what I'm guessing is a very recent MS codec. The fact that's in an AVI container tells me that the person who encoded it is insane and needs immediate medical attention.
