Scaling Down Screen Resolution While using Tight or X11 vnc

I setup a vnc server on my desktop so I could control the root session and it works great but it's really hard to use it since my screens are way different resolutions. My netbook is 1024x600 while my desktop is 1680x1050 so the output from my desktop on my netbook is huge.

Is there any way to scale down the video output on the fly?

edit: i found out that x11vnc has the -scale option so i set it server side but when I have it enabled i cant connect to it from my netbook using tightvnc's vncviewer, it just keeps saying "connection refused" and its definitely that option thats causing it because I can connect to it fine if I remove that option.

Re: Scaling Down Screen Resolution While using Tight or X11 vnc

x11vnc prints out much useful info to the termial (or a logfile if you specify '-o filename'.)  Do you see it printing out anything when your VNC viewer attempts to connect?

At startup x11vnc also prints out which port it is listening on (e.g. PORT=5900)  Which one does it say for you?  Are you pointing your vncviewer to that port?  Does your firewall allow it in?

To force a single port use, for example, "-rfbport 5900" on the x11vnc cmdline.  If something else (other vnc server) is using that port x11vnc will print an error message and then exit.
