BASH history - how to make up-arrow show only unique history entries.

Hi all.
I am used to Arch's bash settings, when pressing the up-arrow in console, I only get unique entries and not 'ls' then again 'ls' and again.... if I actually used these commands (In Arch it would only show one ls and then the command before that)
So how to do that in other distros? (like Debian)
