I have been on linux quite a while - most recently 2.5 years on Arch, but I really think this is a newbie question and I am rather ashamed not to know the answer.
Are the messages printed to the screen at the end of the boot process (after dmesg stops logging) logged anywhere? Is there any other way of knowing what they are? If they are just warnings rather than show stoppers, then they appear momentarily and I frequently don't have time to read them (or read them properly) before they are gone. I am seeing one at the moment about .config files, but it is the last thing printed before the login console appears and I simply can't read it in time.

If you only need to read what is on the screen your Scroll Lk will pause it.
There is also a Wiki article:
All men have stood for freedom...
For freedom is the man that will turn the world upside down.
