Blank screen with Kernel 2.6.32 and Catalyst

Second "upgrade" problem, starting X with the latest Catalyst causes the monitor to switch off. The output of startx does not point to any problems. This is with and ATI Radeon HD 4850.

Re: Blank screen with Kernel 2.6.32 and Catalyst

I have the same problem and gpu here. Switching off monitor on tty7 fglrx adds this line to dmesg output:

[fglrx:fireglAsyncioIntEnableMsgHandler] *ERROR* IRQMGR returned error 1 when trying to enable interrupt source ff000035

Problem occurs with both aur/catalyst and aur/catalyst-opencl. System: x86_64, Xorg.0.log

Re: Blank screen with Kernel 2.6.32 and Catalyst

Works here.

Troubleshooting howto:

1: check that you have the older xorg
2: boot to new kernel commandline -> put 3 on grub menuline if you use inittab method for starting X
3: compile catalyst using new kernel
4: delete /etc/ati/amdpcdb  <-- or similar smile
5: disable kms

Hope it works after that.

Edit : using x86_64 + hd4850

That did it! Now I remember that this directory has already been a troublemaker some months ago.

Thank you.

Re: Blank screen with Kernel 2.6.32 and Catalyst

That did not for me. I upgraded today from a working kernel 2.6.31-6/catalyst 9.11 to 2.6.32-2/9.12 (xorg-server still 1.6.3.901-1).
With the old xorg.conf I get a blank screen but apparently X is running: I can kill it with ctrl+alt+backspc and use my keyboard shortcuts to launch programs, then switching to console I can see those.
Any idea?

Edit: x86_64, no testing

Edit 2: the problem seems related to my dual screen configuration. Something works with an aticonfig --initial generated xorg.conf but if I try to add the line:

Option "EnableRandR12" "false"

which I had in my previous xorg.conf, it blanks.

Also very interesting: if I try Xorg -configure it breaks giving a backtrace, apparently a segfault.
Mmh, no clue here.
