xrandr and external monitor: low resolutions?

when i plug in the hdmi cable, my computer and the external monitor both switch to 640x480, when i set to 1280x768 on external monitor (even if its capable of 1366x768) my laptop monitor becomes black, and it doesn't come back unless i reboot the computer.

i still haven't tried out the vga port....

is there something i need to know to fix issues?
and another question: how do i set my external monitor as an extension of my laptop instead of using it as main? and how do i set my external monitor as main and UNIQUE (so i leave my laptop monitor black)?

thanks you all big_smile

http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Xorg_RandR_1.2

and if you can't figure it out with the information from the above site,
could you post your xrandr -q output and what xrandr commands you are
using to set up your dual monitors?

Re: xrandr and external monitor: low resolutions?

Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 1366 x 768, maximum 8192 x 8192
VGA1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
LVDS1 connected 1366x768+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 256mm x 144mm
   1366x768       59.7*+
   640x480        59.9
HDMI1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
DP2 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)

this is my xrandr -q

i never used any command, it all goes by itself (i'm surprised too...)

i'll try following the guide after i come back from work, i'm sorry i don't know how i could have missed that...

Re: xrandr and external monitor: low resolutions?

The reason it goes by itself, if I'm not mistaken, is because HDMI supports hotplugging.  I've never really done much with HDMI, so I'm not sure if there is any sort of a work-around or anything to disable or take advantage of this feature.

Re: xrandr and external monitor: low resolutions?

first of all, make sure you have the HDMI output unmuted in alsamixer.  if you are still having problems with HDMI sound check
