Hmm... Is this the origin of my sound woes?

Well, well, well... I just discovered that, while the group that dives access to sound is called "audio", all the documentation I can find about ALSA refers to a (nonexistant by default) group called "sound".

Do I have to add a "sound" group for ALSA to work right?

well do you have no sound at all? I have no sound group, use alsa and have sound. So my guess is a sound group is not needed

depends on your udev setup whether you need a sound group or not, by default i dont think you do. your sound might have broken through the latest udev update which has a new imho terrible permissions system

No... I've been able to listen to CDs for a while, but no audio files. :? And apparently this is not just a GStreamer problem... Also happens on KDE/ARTS if you can believe it.

Is your 'PCM' audio channel muted?

I was gonna say that...

If you can listen to audio at all, then your sound is fine - it's not the modules, it's not alsa, etc

run alsamixer and hit 'M' on the PCM channel - I suspect, as does kpiche, that it's muted

Not strictly true. Many times I've had alsa problems, but playing a CD works fine because its routed straight through the sound card, not through the mixer.

Re: Hmm... Is this the origin of my sound woes?

PCM was unmuted, all channels were unmuted.

(This was before the uDev upgrade though.)

If this is a problem with the mixer... Then no mixer of any kind was working.
