blank DVD will not be recognized

Huhu,

i have troubles with burning DVD's (i guess also with CD's, but haven't tried yet, no blank CD @ /home wink)
I'm using graveman (also tried brasero), it found my CD/DVD drive and also makes copies from CD's/DVD's

But when i start burning an .iso file, it appears it  didnt recognized the blank DVD. Graveman just continues "burning" even if i open the CD slot.
Error messages from graveman aren't that helpful.

My PCmanFM also recognizes my CD drive, i can mount CD/DVD and copy files from it, so no problem seesm to be there.

I know this post is somehow ridiculous to some of you, but i'm really lost right now.
Need some help sad

Re: blank DVD will not be recognized

Not that long ago someone posted here a link to a discussion between cdrkit and cdrtools.

The first one is released under a completely open licence but is not as advanced an is said to contain many bugs. The latter is very recent, contains no known bugs but is released under a licence that not all users trust. The discussion is very heavy.

After reading it, I uninstalled cdrkit in favour of cdrtools (in community IIRC).

Don't know if that solves you problems, but it might help.

Zl.
BTW: cdrtools/cdrkit contain the tools that graveman/brasero/etc rely on.

Re: blank DVD will not be recognized

thx for reply -  the thread is really heavy.

i just gave it a try and switched to cdrtools, but graveman and brasero still won't burn the .iso.

graveman just stops before starting burning.
brasero tried to burn - without success - but gave an error report

Re: blank DVD will not be recognized

hey guys,

i know it sound kind of stupid, but im really desperate and confused right now.

Brasero and Graveman still wont burn my DVD, but i have no clue where to start to solve this trouble.
I already changed cdrkit to cdrtools - without success.

im linux noob and like to learn my lesson with this issue.
My laptop has only one CD/DVD-R/RW drive, but i can find much more in my /dev, like cd, cdrom, cdrom0, cdrw, cdrw0, dvd, dvd0 and graveman found scd0 (with full vendor name and so on....)
i never worried about this in my ubuntu time, but know i may need to understand this.

Please give me a hint, since non of other threads i found could help me.....

Re: blank DVD will not be recognized

I'm having the same issue.  Yesterday I did an Syu and then my hal wouldn't automount things anymore, and my printer would not be detected by CUPS either, yet my keyboard and mouse work.  I checked the pacman log and hal wasn't updated it seems.  For some reason before I could automount with the policykit hack but now I had to do that to get my things to work.  This brings me back to Brasero though.  Before the Syu I would put a dvd +rw in and then I could burn just fine with brasero using isos, now I have the same problem as mrorange where brasero isn't detecting blank dvd's being inserted. I'm asuming whatever is messing with Brasero is also what messed up my hal to where I had to use the hack to make it useful. I'm wondering if this is related to your issue?

Re: blank DVD will not be recognized

Try wodim dev=/dev/<device> driveropts=burnfree, noforcespeed speed=8 -dao -eject -overburn -v <image>.iso.  wodim --devices to see what the device name is.  (Use cdrecord instead of wodim when using cdrtools.)  If this doesn't work, the error it gives will probably be more helpful.

Is this a laptop?  I've had bad luck with laptop CD burners (I have one laptop where the CD drive doesn't work unless you push on it during POST).  Even if it's not a laptop, it's possible that this is a hardware problem.

Re: blank DVD will not be recognized

Well I found out that my computer was actually recognizing that there was a blank dvd in the drive and even what type, I also then found out that for some reason the new version of Brasero didn't work for me and reverted back to 2.26 and then brasero would see the disk and would work again.  Not sure why the new version of brasero didn't work.  I never found out what messed up with my Hal but at least it works and I even got my printer going again.

Re: blank DVD will not be recognized

I have the same problem - can't mount blank DVD+/-RW(DVD+/-R works fine). And seems problem in devicekit-disks or something else, because in Brasero for a one moment, when inserting disk, I can see "Blank DVD+RW..." for choose it, but one second later - all disappear. Another problem - disk's still mounted, if I eject it not by software unmount/eject.

PS: Sorry for my English.
