so i recently did a pacman -Syu and something caused my external volume controls to quit working...
i don't know which program that controls this...
but alsa-utils was one of the things updated, does anyone know if this is the problem?
any sugestions on how the get those controls recognized?
i looked in the wiki and tried to downgrade alsa-utils to the previous version in my cache, but...
i get this error:
[aaron@Arch ~]$ sudo pacman -U alsa-lib-1.0.21.a-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz
loading package data...
error: 'alsa-lib-1.0.21.a-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz': cannot open package file
any ideas?

While it could be related to alsa, the volume controls on laptops I've seen operate at a lower level. What is the model of the laptop you are using?
When using 'pacman -U' you need to provide the path to the package (I'm assuming the package is not in your home directory). So it would probably be:
sudo pacman -U /var/cache/pacman/pkg/alsa-lib-1.0.21.a-1-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz
