Strange rt2870sta issue

I have MODULES=( !rt2800usb !rt2x00usb !rt2x00lib ) so udev loads the correct module (bug introduced in 2.6.31 and still present in 2.6.32.2). To the point: sometimes I don't get any connection, iwconfig wlan0 shows  ESSID:"" and Link Quality=10/100, and even if I iwconfig wlan0 essid <name>, it does nothing. ifconfig wlan0 down; ifconfig wlan0 up doesn't solve it, but rmmod rt2870sta; modprobe rt2870sta does. What could be wrong?
