Hello!
Im having trouble streaming .ASX streams. realplayer format works fine. but some for some reason .asxfiles wont play.
I got it to work one time. and now i dont know whats the difference in my setup.
Im using: Firefox + gnome-mplayer and gecko-mediaplayer from pacman. i even tried the gnome-mplayer-svn and gecko-mediaplayer-svn
any ideas?

Anyone else experience this problem? i really can get windowsmedia formats to play with either chromium+gecko-mediaplayer and Firefox+gecko-mediaplayer.
Is there a solution for this problem?

The problem with ASX files is that they're not media files; They're simply text files with a pointer to a media file or some other data telling the calling application what it should do with it. It's a URL within a URL so to speak. Look at this thread for instance. The response is from gecko-mediaplayer's creator:
http://groups.google.com/group/gecko-me … 43b46156e3
He says quite clearly that the way that the URL is passed in this case makes it impossible for the plug-in to catch it.
As you said, some ASX files use to work. And I'm guessing that older ones still do. But, Microsoft likes to obfuscate the format in the same way that Apple likes to screw up their trailer site to pretend that they have the superior technology.

Again, it depends on the format of the ASX file. Download one and open it in any text editor. That may give you a cluse to why it isn't working.
