startx killed everything

hi,
I was able to follow the beginner's guide and setup everything on a old Dell x300 box without a problem.. i was even able to see my lxde desktop.  after that, i figured to give it a reboot and see what's the 'normal' operations going to look like.. it first came back with 'graphic' mode commandline display... then when i tried to startx, everything 'turned black and locked up.  i couldn't even get on via ssh.. seems like it is dead...i had to power cycle it.  thoughts?

thank you

Re: startx killed everything

Try hooking up an external monitor.

My old Latitude LS has the habit of not being able tun run X.org on the first go.
But when I hook up and external monitor, switch monitors to it with the Fn and function key, and then run X on the external monitor I get a picture. After that, I switch back to the laptop's LCD, unplug my external monitor and run X on the screen of the laptop.
I'm assuming it's unable to get some info from my laptop's screen that it can get from the external one.
Perhaps your Dell has the same issue.

I can't say it will work for you, I just know that works. Discovered that one by "accident", by simply trying to see what it would do on an external monitor.

Also a great suggestion.
What videochip does that Dell have? Probably an Intel GMA?
