i am able to use pidgin normally but the tray icon (is this a widget?) that is normally displayed next to the clock is gone. any pointers? TIA

Yes. It's a widget. Try using the default configuration in /etc/xdg/awesome/rc.lua if you're not already using it.

The tray is broken in the current release (unless you have 2 screens, in which case it merely appears on the wrong one). I believe it's fixed on the trunk, though it's been awhile so I can't be sure any more.

The tray is not broken in the current release. The tray dissapeared for some users in the previous release. In the end it probably doesn't concern him, if all applications but Pidgin display an icon.
You need to install an RTFM interface.

two more points:
1) the configuration i have is the default configuration.
2) no widgets are currently working
basically it looks like awful library already included in 3.4+ provides the widget support i am looking for (or does one need to get the obvious/bashets/vicious libraries for widget support?)
