Ops you're right, it's 9400M GS.. And the high end one is 9600M GT.. I'll reinstall OSX, do the updates if available and will reinstall Linux using GPT for the partition type this time while using rEFIt.. I'll let you know what happens with the batteries.
It's celebrated by everyone actually.. New Year's Eve has nothing to with any religion I guess? Happy New Year!

I have the new MacBook and the first time I installed arch on it, a lot of stuff didn't work. So I just created a wiki page for the new macbook and it needs some content. Can you guys help out?
Maybe you could help me.
My Arch installation was -almost- perfect on my Macbook except that the colors on my screen seem to be all faded...
I noticed that the most with the RED and GREN. Usually they are very bright, but that seem washed out...
Any idea?

are you using the nvidia drivers or nouveau or nv?
if you are using the nividia, you can also change the gamma per color in the nvidia X server settings (System -> Preferences)

Anyone has got the audio optical jack output to work (MBP5,2)? Just wondering before I go chase the audio optical connector. does it work in 5.1?
Thanks.

nope. just wondering. I don't have a optical audio connector (not this kind anyway) and was wondering if I should invest in one. The goal is to be able to use my home theater system in 5.1 when playing movies (right now, the analog audio jack of course only give me 2channels).

The port emits red light when I enable S/PDIF on my mbp 5.5, but I do not have any cables to actually test the output.

I do have that too since the beginning but jack sense still doesn't work

yes, jack sense doesn't work, but that does not necessarily imply that digital output doesn't. or does it?

if that's the output next to the headphones jack, it doesn't work for me despite i play for mixer settings..

Isn't that the microphone input? Jack sensing works fine for headphones here.

Are you using Arch? Is there any patches or configuration parameters you've set for alsa? Which generation of MBP are you using?

Stock arch, alsa-snapshot and mbp 5.5 which only has 1 port, maybe that is the reason why it works.

alsa-snapshot? and do you have some configuration lines under /etc/modprobe.d/options and some other files like sound?

the output next to the headphone jack is the microphone output indeed.
The headphone jack outputs both analog (regular jack) and digital (that's the LED).
Apparently, alsa recognizes both analog and digital:

back to the initial question then.
to FALK: what do you mean "Jack sensing works fine for headphones"? you mean it detects when you plugin some audio jack and turn off sounds on the speakers? I have looked for ages for a solution to that problem and never encountered anyone reporting success. Do you have a MB or MBP? 5,1 or 5,2 or 5,5?

Yep, exactly. Speakers turn off when I plug in the headphones. I can also adjust volume for speakers and headphones independently, which is pretty handy. MBP 5,5.

I just tried model=mbp55 (I am using the latest alsa from arch, i.e. 1.0.22). It does recognize mbp55 (was using mb5 before), but it does not make any difference for me w.r.t. mb5:
- speaker work (controlled by master/PCM/front
- headphone work (controlled by HP/PCM)
but it does not switch off headphones when I plugin the jack.
but, I have a MBP5,2.... That's probably the difference. Or may be I should install alsa-snapshot.
On the positive side, I just noticed that spdif is listed in alsamixer, so there is some hope as far as digital audio output... Will keep you guys updated.

are you guys using gnome btw? because with fn + volume up/down keys, it does decrease and increase Master and PCM levels "at the same time" no matter what i do.. setting the levels manually using mixer works fine.. you guys have this problem too @frigaut?

yes, I use gnome.
for me, I'm set up that I don't need to press fn to get the multimedia/backlight/volume control. So I assume "fn + volume up" means in my case "volume up", not "F12".
So, the answer is no. Volume up on my machine controls only Master.
note: I'm *not* using pommed.

I'm using pommed so that I can set the backlight with fn keys.. For me, "fn + volume up" is "volume up" too! But it does increase Master and PCM at the same time despite I only set it to set Master from the mixer settings..

jacksense starts working with the latest patch available at here. i've discovered the following problems on my MBP 5.1 so far:
1) I don't know if this's related with the patch or not but alsaconf cannot found any sound cards, but the kernel seems to recognize and load all the necessary modules for the sound card
2) When headphones are plugged in, I've to mute and unmute the Headphone channel a few times in order to get sound from them. I don't know why this happens.
But all in all, the jack sense is working!
I needed to delete all lines inside /etc/modprobe.d/sound.conf btw because there were some error messages during boot process due to unrecognition of sound card indicating those lines.
Share your thoughts and write your comments into the bug report so we can get jacksense support in the upstream soon!

Hi, future archlinux user here...but i got some questions.
I was just wondering if the archwiki guide that that explains how to get sound, video drivers, pommed and all that works for the macbook 5,5. If not, what guide do you guys use? My macbook is connected to a tv with mini display port to HDMi adaptor and HDMI to HDMI cable. Do you guys know if the new nvidia driver?(195.35 i think) allows me to get a proper resolution on the tv with this setup?
Thanks!
Offline
1) don't know for the 5,5, I own a 5,2. I don't think there is huge difference, but not sure.
2) the nividia driver I believe still have the issue with the display EDID not being aquired properly. That may be an issue with your TV, especially if it HD (1080p or 720p). Mine doesn't see the proper resolution when I connect to a TV I have at work (thru the mini DVI to VGA though).
