X DRI problems with Sony VAIO Laptop

Hi All,

I am having trouble getting DRI/Acceleration going with My Sony Laptop (VGN-FW63GF).

I have tried vaious things following the ATI wiki.

With no xorg.conf file and the KMS modules setup I get no DRI as per the following Xorg.o.log:

However, if I disable KMS by putting "radeon.modeset=0" into my grub menu.1st file on the kernel line. I seem to get DRI enabled because the above warning goes away.
But .... when I run glxgears it crashes, and if I try to enable composite for the desktop, X crashes back to the login screen and I have to login in failsafe mode.

Anyone have any suggestions on getting this to work without crashing X.

I have installed all the correct modules as per the wiki: i.e mesa, ati-dri, libgl etc

It looks like you have an HD X2300 IGP, is that correct?  If so you are not going to have any luck getting acceleration working especially for compositing.  Anything that is R600 based on up doesn't have working 3d acceleration yet.  Your only option, if you are desperate, would be to try fglrx if it supports your IGP.  I wouldn't even mess with fglrx though, personally I hate it and haven't had any luck using it.

Use the packages from extra and make sure you do not enable any KMS mode. If your card is too new for old DRI1 support you have to compile some packages. DRI2 needs KMS enabled + recompile libdrm with experimental ati API enabled, recompile mesa/ati-dri for the experimental libdrm and then xf86-video-ati. Or go with your own git packages from AUR.

Yes but if it were in the topic title i wouldn't have to open and read the topic first to know what it is about. If i don't have a Vaio FW-series with ATI card this topic doesn't apply to or interest me. So as a rule of thumb, if your problem applies to a certain piece of hardware you should mention it in the title so people know what to expect.

"X DRI problems with ATI X2300" would be fine too in this case, better even since it's specifically a videocard problem.

Well I don't agree. There are a lot of folk having similar problems with other ATI graphics. If anything, I should have made the title more general to ATI/radeon, rather than my Sony.

This issue is all about what revision of driver(R300/R500/R600) works with KMS/DRI2 ...so instead of nit-picking about the title, how about focusing on the issue at hand, that would be much
more helpful ..:D
