I'm not familiar with Linux document programs at all. I don't want some 80MB of OO chewing up my HD for just "swriter". I can't spare the space.
I just want to use something which supports most simple Microsoft Word documents.
Any suggestions?

calling a microsoft document simple is like calling the atlantic ocean a "pond".

hahah...Isn't that what the European folk call it? A pond...
By simple, I meant not needing stuff like tables, scripts and whatever else. Just plain 'ole text files that dumb people like myself have been used to creating in Word.
I haven't used Abiword in a long time. I'll give it a shot. Fairly good compatiblity is what I'm after, not functionality.

What about Lyx? It's a What You See Is What You Mean GUI frontend to Latex. Should be more than adequate for simple documents.

Oops. I didn't notice the "compatibility" requirement. What about KWord? I'm not even sure if that can be downloaded separately from koffice though.

If it's compatibility to Microsoft Word, Abiword might disappoint you. OOo is far further in that respect. If you only receive / send out very, very simple documents mind, it might be good enough for you. For me, Abiword didn't even import / export font faces correctly when set with styles rather than hard formating ...

Ah, sweet. "catdoc"? Never knew that existed. I tried Abiword and it does pretty good, but I get a few wonky looking formatted documents, and some occasional weird ASCII extended characters. For the most part, Abiword works pretty good.
In truth, I do everything in Latex. I've been looking for an easier way of handling these "doc" files sitting on my backup drive these last few years. I've got some dating back to '96. I'll see how it works out. Thanks for the info.
