fbsplash problems

I followed the tutorials for using fbsplash and fbcondecor, I have done everything from patching the kernel to editing my config files and rebuilding the init disk... fbsplash seems to load up fine in the /etc/rc.d/ and I have the initscripts-splash ... wth am i doing wrong???!!! What did I miss!!??

When I try and run this command to try and see if it works I get the following:

$ splash_manager -c demo -t darch -m s --steps=100
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
mkfifo(//lib/splash/cache/.splash) failed.
cat: //lib/splash/cache/daemon.pid: No such file or directory
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
/usr/bin/splash_manager: line 245: [: : unary operator expected
usage: chvt N
