External monitor (projector) for presentations

HP Compaq 8510W, NVidia Quadro 570 graphics with nvidia driver, 4GB RAM
Arch + KDE 4.3.4

Just about the only remaing issue with this system is hooking up to a projector for presentations.  So far, I have used the NVidia control panel and I can get something on the projector, but the aspect ratio and registration is always an issue.  (The laptop is 16:10 (normally set to 1920x1200), and projectors are normally 4:3)

Ideally, I would like:
1.  system preconfigured to work with a generic projector---eg 800x600 or 1024x768
2.  "side by side" mode---ie be able to drag a window onto the projector display, and still see other things on my desktop.

Is the NVidia utility the best tool, or should I be using xorg.conf?

A related question:
I am now running 1920x1200 for both builtin and docked modes.  The dock uses a Dell 2407W** which obviously handles 1920x1200 a lot better than does the builtin screen....:)

Is there a way to automatically change the display dpi depending on whether it is in the dock?  I want to keep the resolution in "native" mode (always best with flat panels)

**24" diagonal---arguably the best flat panel display ever made.

Re: External monitor (projector) for presentations

Best way is to use nvidia-settings and if you want to use your laptop + projector  use a seperate X or can you have KDE handling twinview as two seperate desktops?
