Microphone doesn't work when unplugged and plugged in

I was trying to record something the other day and was wondering why I had to have the gain on the microphone turned up so high. After a while I figured out that audacity was recording with my internal microphone (dell laptop). I tried using the external one and finally got it to work if I had it plugged in when I rebooted. The second I would unplug it and plug it back in though my computer would start recording off my internal microphone. So, I can use the external as long as I don't unplug it after I have booted. What???

`amixer scontrols` gives this:

Simple mixer control 'Headphone',0
Simple mixer control 'Speaker',0
Simple mixer control 'PCM',0
Simple mixer control 'Mic Jack Mode',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Default PCM',0
Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Playback Source',0
Simple mixer control 'Capture',0
Simple mixer control 'Digital',0
Simple mixer control 'Mux',0
Simple mixer control 'PC Beep',0

There is only one capture listed, and I'm thinking there needs to be two. When I was using Ubuntu I know there was two, but I didn't really pay attention on Arch. Also, here is the output from `arecord --list-devices`:

**** List of CAPTURE Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: STAC92xx Analog [STAC92xx Analog]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

I also updated alsa some time ago, which I'm not sure if it has anything to do with, but from a recording I did on December 5 which doesn't sound like it has all the hum I get now I assume it had something to do with the upgrade.

...
[2009-12-31 12:23] upgraded alsa-lib (1.0.21.a-1 -> 1.0.22-1)
[2009-12-31 12:23] upgraded alsa-plugins (1.0.21-1 -> 1.0.22-1)
[2009-12-31 12:23] upgraded alsa-utils (1.0.21-1 -> 1.0.22-1)
[2010-01-03 11:51] upgraded alsa-utils (1.0.22-1 -> 1.0.22-2)
[2010-01-05 18:27] upgraded lib32-alsa-lib (1.0.21.a-1 -> 1.0.22-1)

Does anybody know why this is happening?

Re: Microphone doesn't work when unplugged and plugged in

I had similar problems after a recent upgrade. I hadn't tried rebooting with the mic plugged in, but all I get now is static and hum when I go to record. I'm working on my desktop and both the front and back plugs give the same results. I couldn't find anything in the alsa package changes that would have done it and am not that familiar with alsa to begin with. Any alsa experts? I also lost a device on upgrade. :-/
