I wish I could remember the quote but it's from "The Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" and it goes something like: "When you plan to do a project it is best not to set a time to have it done...". Great quote, anyways , good to see Paktahn coming along.

Is it possible to restrict paktahn to AUR only?
And does it do --sysupgrade (also restricted to AUR)??

I'm not sure what you mean by restricting paktahn only to the AUR. For search, installation, upgrades?
At this time paktahn doesn't do that but we do plan to be able to say upgrade all AUR packages (and nothing else). Proper versioning and upgrading (including aur packages) will be a major focus of the next release, at least for me.
(0.8.2 came out today by the way.)

Thanks ashyanbhog,
Paktahn 0.8.2 is out! We're already working on automatic aur upgrades for 0.8.3 but considering the code changes that have taken place in the last few months we could probably take Mozilla's approach and get away with calling it 0.8.5 at least! The new main web site is at http://github.com/skypher/paktahn and I strongly encourage everyone to file bug reports if they have any problems. A wiki is also up with my current notes on my branches.
As for 0.8.2, ashyanbhog's link (dejari's release notes) says it much better than I can. We have some basic versioning support, proxy support sans authentication (please test and report timetrap ), customizepkg support was in for everything but a last minute bug caused us to pull it for non-aur packages, we have support for just grabbing down pkgbuilds with pak -G and there are many other bug fixes and improvements. See the news for the whole lot. http://github.com/skypher/paktahn/blob/master/NEWS
There are still a few bugs and loose ends and I hope to patch at least one or two of the most evident ones (in our issue tracker) and get some sort of minor release out in the next week or two, if not sooner.
Thanks for your support. Please keep giving us your thoughts and feedback!

Does any manual exists for this?

At this time the only thing resembling a manual is the README. If anyone would like to try to start a proper manual or add the readme, etc to the wiki at http://wiki.github.com/skypher/paktahn that would be most welcome. A paktahn section on AUR Helpers on ArchWiki or a Paktahn article in ArchWiki would also be welcome contributions.
Please post here if you add something.

Hi, I try Paktahn but I ends with:
==> Cache "local" not found, building it.
==> Illegal :UTF-8 character starting at position 1.

Zajca,
I would appreciate it if you would add a ticket at Paktahn's issues page http://github.com/skypher/paktahn/issues. More importantly, did this error occur when you just ran pak? Or did you try pak -G, -S, firefox, etc? What are your locale settings?

Zajca,
Thanks for adding the issue. Hopefully leslie and I will have time to take a look at it this saturday.
DeeCodeUh,
You may prefer the quickinstall method leslie blogged about here http://blog.viridian-project.de/2009/10 … installer/ or using a paktahn repo if you're willing to trust us to give you clean binaries.

Just a note, Leslie and I have a bugfix release planned for this Sunday.
We've already selected and started on the bugs but if anyone would like to report one or add one to the issue tracker (http://github.com/skypher/paktahn/issues) we'd love that.
Zajca, a fix for your problem has already been committed. Let us know if it persists, of course.

We're working on a system upgrade facility as well, it might be done in two weeks.

Hello everyone,
Paktahn 0.8.3 is out! This is primarily a bugfix release. The changes can be seen in the news file here: http://github.com/skypher/paktahn/blob/ … 99d28/NEWS
...but I'll offer a brief recap.
- Proxy support works properly now, thanks to a report from nitralime.
- Non-Unicode strings are handled better, thanks to a report from zajca
- We update the cache after package removal, thanks to a suggestion from Ralith.
- Reinstallation was broken in 0.8.2 and this has been fixed.
- Trying to install or get pkgbuilds for non-existent packages is handled properly.
- The user is asked to edit the pkgbuild in case it's dependencies are malformed.
- Version comparison now takes provider packages into account.
The really good news though is that we have a branch with AUR updates working and hope to make another release with that functionality in a few weeks and some other stuff if we can cram it in...
Please continue reporting bugs and filing feature requests on our issue tracker as well as generally being awesome. Issue Tracker: http://github.com/skypher/paktahn/issues
Thank you.

Yaourt can update all installed packages, including those that come from AUR, by running "yaourt -Syu". Can paktahn do that, too?
Offline
peti,
almost. 0.9 which is due in about two weeks will be able to do that.

Can paktahn cache building definitions (content of the tarball) and the built packages as yaourt did with ExportToLocalRepository key in /etc/yaourtrc?

Hey. Nice project, but I have a small problem :
I can't chown files to root in my home folder (NFS mounted, root locally but not on the network). Is there a way to tell paktahn to work in an other directory ?
Offline
jiyunatori, we will add a directory override to the next version.
Until then you can just run Paktahn like this:
HOME=/my/writable/dir paktahn ...

thanks !

when is the next update going to be submitted here in the AUR? yaourt has a much more up to date release than paktahn right now, have you abandoned the project?

slint: Thanks for the tip.
panzeroceania: Sorry things have been so silent and we haven't made more of a statement on this front. dejari and I have both been very busy but last we spoke he wanted to make a release by the end of April. I'll catch up with him and see what the state of affairs is. Hopefully that can still happen...and we've got support for AUR updates in master so that would make it in the next release.
Sorry again for the long quiet. It's about time it came to an end.
