[solved] Installing on extended partitions

I like partitioning my hard drives, but I am not sure if what I have done is too much. Here is the output of fdisk -l through Ubuntu.

Disque /dev/sda: 60.0 Go, 60011642880 octets
255 têtes, 63 secteurs/piste, 7296 cylindres
Unités = cylindres de 16065 * 512 = 8225280 octets
Identifiant de disque : 0x379c7acb

Périphérique Amorce Début Fin Blocs Id Système
/dev/sda1 1 2019 16217586 5 Etendue
/dev/sda2 2020 3235 9767520 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 7054 7296 1951897+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda4 3236 7053 30668085 83 Linux
/dev/sda5 * 1 12 96327 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 13 134 979933+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda7 135 1046 7325608+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda8 1047 2019 7815591 83 Linux

Les entrées de la table de partitions ne sont pas dans l'ordre du disque

sda1 is extended, and it contains sda5 through 8
sda2 : Ubuntu /
sda3 : swap
sda4 : Ubuntu /home
sda5 : Arch /boot
sda6 : swap
sda7 : Arch /
sda8 : Arch /home

Is having an entire operating system in extended partitions a bad thing ?
I ask, because I haven't been able to boot Archlinux. I would get Error 15 if I went off sda5's grub, and a kernel panic with sda2's grub.

Thanks.

There is, as far as I know, nothing bad about having your operating systems on extended partitions.  Just as long as GRUB is installed to the MBR.

Re: [solved] Installing on extended partitions

Everything for linux and swap works fine on extended partitions (but not Windows, which you should always install on a primary).

I suggest reinstalling grub to the MBR, being sure you know which /boot/grub folder on which partition you want it to use.  Note that Ubuntu uses grub v2 and Arch uses grub v1 (by default).

Also, Ubuntu and Arch can share a single swap partition - no real need to have two unless you plan to hibernate one while the other is running.

Re: [solved] Installing on extended partitions

Thanks for the replies, I'll look into the MBR and all that.

I think this method will fix it, but you need to determine which /boot/grub folder you want to be used (Ubuntu or Arch)...
