Convert router into music streaming device with Linux
Hi,
I got this old wireless router lying around at home. I wondered whether I could possibly attach my router to my hifi, and then connect to it from my laptop and wirelessly stream music from my pc to the router, which will then play the tunes from my pc over the hifi.
Is that possible? I'd love to use GNU/Linux, of course!

First question: does the router have an audio-out connection? If not, you can't connect it to your sound system.

No, but it has some ethernet ports, and there are ethernet to audio / video converters.

I'm not sure how much the audio/video converters cost...
You are likely better off buying a router that supports openwrt and has a usb port. Then you can buy a cheap $10ish usb to audio adapter.

A good, OpenWrt-supported router doesn't cost too much, your old router probably won't have enough RAM either to allow you to run on it what you want.
There are good solutions like a Logitech Squeezebox available to drop into your LAN to which you can stream. The way you suggest it is a bit clumsy (it would involve a lot of hacking and sound quality would be so-so, but I don't know how important that is to you).
I have a server with a sound card hooked up to my amp, and MPD on it so I can control it from my laptop. Once I have the money I might switch to a NAS and a Squeezebox.
