There is no absolute date when it will hit stable, it will come when it comes.

I think Xorg 1.8 is the release that will drop HAL support.

Re: When are we to expect HAL removal?

Seeing as how Xorg 1.7.4 was released on 8 January 2010, I wonder if it won't be a while... sad

Re: When are we to expect HAL removal?

what does this mean for doing system upgrades? will it be simply a matter of upgrading as usual and then removing hal? will all the various hal configurations, files, etc. be removed automatically?

/me tries to make sense of this, but fails horribly.

And for those that want it as fast as posible: use testing, report bugs, contribute to the upstream development and testing.

Re: When are we to expect HAL removal?

anti-destin - as usual, keep a close eye on Arch news and pacman post-install messages. They will tell you what user intervention is required, if any.

And as Mr.Elendig says, all of this will go to testing first, so you have an opportunity to test and provide feedback before it's released to the extra repo.

Re: When are we to expect HAL removal?

Xorg is not the only project still relying on hal. As was mentioned, _everything_ must be ported over to use udev or the kernel, depending on what aspect is being used, in order for HAL to become completely obsolete.

FYI, Ubuntu 10.4 Alpha 2 has apparently dropped HAL. http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/lucid/alp … %20removal

1.7.4 is a bugfix release, not a 'real' release.

Xserver 1.7 was released in October.

Re: When are we to expect HAL removal?

Just waiting for developpers to have a fully working hal replacement in udev. Let them take the time they need. And ubuntu 10.04 is only in alpha2 stage... So wink

Re: When are we to expect HAL removal?

does anyone know of any regressions when using pulseaudio with udev compared to using it with the hal backend?
i use a self-built pulseaudio with udev and it works fine for me… (and pulse was the last bit in my system i needed hal for wink)
