Hi there.
I am new to linux and have just recently performed another clean install of arch linux onto my system. I was just wanting find out why after running my system for about 4 hours my xorg server memory usage increased from about 30MB to 1.5GB? I dont think this is normal behaviour.
My system is
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600
4GB DDR2 1067Mhz
Nvidida Gefore 8800GTX
running
Archlinux 64-bit
with xorg-server 1.7.3.902-1
and KDEmod4
btw, my system is entirely up to date. If needed I will move my post to the KDEmod forums, but im unsure of the likeliness that kdemod is the cause. Thanks in advance.

It's probably fine.
It is cached memory, meaning that Xorg is just "remembering" stuff that it drew so that it can draw it faster next time. If you notice your computer slowing down, then it's a problem. Otherwise, it will be cleared as it is needed.
Try running
free -m
in a terminal and seeing what it says.

1.5GB
Can I ask what tool you're using to come to that figure?
Edit: Never mind - beaten to it.

Just to report the same behavior with an ATI RV530GL and xf86-video-ati 6.12.4 driver. I don't think the memory consumed is cached memory (is there evidence for such behavior in X?) - this really looks like a bad memory leak.

I have to admit, I also noticed my memory usage going up. And yes that is without cache.
X is the biggest one in their, also using the open source ati driver.
I always wrote that off to libraries and what not that X could hold in memory and that way would not count as cache.
But i'm far from a memory management expert.

Greetings,
I don't know if this is helpful or not but I can tell you that on my desktop runningJWM and on my wife's laptop running KDEMod, we are not experiencing this problem. X is using only around 3% of mem of my wife's laptop for example, so it shouldn't be a kdemod issue. They both have been updated today.
Just wanted to share that since it is not an across the board issue. For further info, wife's laptop uses an intel video card while desktop uses an nvidia geforce2 and only has 1 gb ram.

There is a known memory leak in the ATI R600 driver.
It only happens with specific 3D commands.

Dunno about the Nvidia one.

I have disabled desktop effects (thus no 3d used) just to check and the problem still seems to be here.

That would explain mine, I use the xf86-video-ati from the repos and use some compositing effects.

So do I but even after deactivating compositing the problem still seems to be there.
