slow virtual X

Hello everyone!

I was trying around in the last days with different Desktop Environments and now I have a problem. When I use openbox (almost) everything is fine but I don't know how to teach openbox to load the entire window when I focus on it. (Some parts are black or somethings else.) When I scale it, it becomes fine.

On the other Desktop Environments like Gnome, KDE4, Fluxbox, moving windows is very slow. When I use firefox or opera (I didn't try other browsers) the display of the browser loads observably from top to down or from down to top. (Depends on how I'm scrolling.) Than is really annoying. hmm

Maybe something I shouldn't have done is to try out the cairo-dock but I don't really know from when exactly these problems started. Before using openbox everything was fine and I don't remember having changed a lot of stuff.

I also changed the refresh-rate in the xorg.conf to the correct value of the monitor but that didn't help. (as expected hmm )

I'm using a Asus HD 4850 Matrix, PCI-E 2.0, 512MB GDDR3.
The standard ati driver and the radeonhd driver make no difference.

I hope that somebody can help me.
Thank you in advance. wink

Re: slow virtual X

I could solve the problem of openbox by choosing a different theme in the appearance of gnome.

But the other problem is still the same. sad

Re: slow virtual X

I just found out, that the desktop enviromment is only slow if I start a second desktop environment on -- :1.

I think I can live with that...but is that normal? (My computer should have far enough power to handle two X-servers...)

Re: slow virtual X

The 512MB are of the graphic card. I have 2x 2048MB DDR2-1066 DIMM.

But maybe you're right about it. I don't know how to check the remaining memory of the graphic card.

Re: slow virtual X

One extreme example is fluxbox. When I move a window there. (now on display 2) The window moves pixel by pixel and the moving of the (opened) window takes so long. hmm When the window is minimized it's normal speed.

Re: slow virtual X

Sorry, I misread. Your machine should be flying regardless of how many X you have open! Perhaps you ought to try a different driver for your video card. Check the wiki under ATI.

Definitely sounds like a driver issue.

Re: slow virtual X

I think I'll try to install the proprietary driver if there is some...

EDIT: I bought my computer as a (ex-)windows-user some months ago and directly started with Archlinux. So don't blame me for buying ATI. big_smile

Re: slow virtual X

Nothing wrong with using that ATi HD4850 in Linux (anymore).
I'm using one as well, with the open source xf86-video-ati driver.
In 2D, the open source one seems to be better than the proprietary Catalyst driver.

What driver are you using?
Have you taken a look at your Xorg log file? Perhaps it contains clues as to why your performance isn't what it should be.
If you have no clue, post it here or on pastebin and copy the url here.

Re: slow virtual X

So I have to downgrade to xorg-server<1.7 for catalyst? ...

Is there any other issue?

EDIT: I won't delete what I wrote before but just don't look at it now. I haven't seen the post just over me before ...

Re: slow virtual X

For catalyst you have to downgrade indeed. Which is why I recommend trying to fix the open source driver first, because it works great in 2D and also provides basic 3D rendering at the moment. I have compositing enabled and stuff like QuakeLive also runs great.
More advanced 3D stuff and shading language doesn't work yet. So if you want to play awesome 3D games, you still need Catalyst. But is that what you want to do?

Re: slow virtual X

I don't care about 3D-acceleration and games.

In fact I started this thread in the belief being stuck in using openbox because I thought that the other desktop environment were slow. Now I found out that it's just when I start a second X-server. I like to do that sometimes if I want to use some feature of another desktop environment and the second one is very slow even though my computer should fly...

Re: slow virtual X

I found this

http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=64039

but it doesn't really help. Maybe because I put the acpid in the end of the deamons section but I won't try each possibility before I post and miss all these helpful users who are helping me. big_smile

Re: slow virtual X

Oh, maybe another information: I the beginning of the thread I had for driver 'ati' in the driver section in the xorg.conf and when I changed to the correct radon or radeonhd everything worked the same.

Re: slow virtual X

Is that your entire /var/log/Xorg.0.log? Because it is pretty short for my standards.
I dont see any loading of videodrivers in there.
The ACPI failed is certainly not the issue of your problems, i've run without it for a month just fine. Also easily fixed by installing the acpid package, it's a daemon started by HAL that helps with power control. You should not need to put it in DAEMONS hook in rc.conf, because if you have "hal" in there it acpid will also be run.
My rc.conf DAEMONS:

DAEMONS=(syslog-ng @hal @cpufreq @network @netfs @crond @alsa @openntpd)

@ makes things run in the background, makes my system boot faster, but you have to test if it works in your case. But fixing the Xorg problem first would be best wink

Ah, so you use a xorg.conf. I run without a xorg.conf file, Xorg detects everything I need with HAL.
Post your xorg.conf file as well, as it can be quite relevant.
Also try renaming it to xorg.conf.old or w/e, and see what xorg does without a config file

Re: slow virtual X

Renaming xorg.conf to xorg.conf old didn't change anything.

I tried to copy & paste rc.conf and Xorg.0.log but it shows nothing here. O_O

I think I exceeded the maximum amount of signs/post.

Re: slow virtual X

@aa: I don't think so. My CPU-usage is low and everything is fine with just one X running.

I changed the name of the post because I know the problem better now.
