I must admit those screenshot are not from my Arch laptop but my Gentoo desktop, but as the question is about inspiration here is my desktop:

........
I integrated much of my software (kget, Amarok, VLC, firefox, konversation, k3b) using dbus and wrote a few thousand lines of Lua code for it.
*Edit: its all awesome, no Conky or iDesk involved at all.

@tdy very nice, Is that zenburn tweaked?
The color scheme is based off Dust GTK+. I gave some more details in the January 2010 Screenshots thread.
how would I go about getting mail updates and such in my statusbar?
I use a ruby script and custom widget, but the best/easiest solution would probably be to use the mail widgets from anrxc's vicious library.

awesome thanks! Now have some mem stats in my statusbar, Just still a bit lost as to getting gmail notifications up there, though {edit; also, having trouble getting the cpugraph widget to show on the far-right (after date/mem), At the moment seems to force to after my tags :L}

Did you hide your cmus code? It looks like your widget just hardcodes the title as a dash.. Am I missing something?
-- {{{ cmus widget
cmus = widget({ type = "textbox", name = "cmus" })
cmus.text = "<span foreground='orange'>cmus: </span><span foreground='green'>-</span>"
-- }}}

I use this script to update the statusbar when cmus changes it's status:
http://github.com/nblock/cmus-notify/tree/master/src/
inside cmus, you have to set: » :set status_display_program=/path/to/cmus-notify.py «
please be aware, that this is just a proof of concept. The script has a few limitations …

http://omploader.org/tM2E3MQStill using a rather basic setup I'm quite happy with. Just some tinkering with the theme and some keybindings, etc.
Edit: Love your colours teh! Mind sharing?
I've recently posted here.

My applications are all listed in the vim window in column 4, I'm using Hut's excellent "ranger" filemanager.
