It may seem odd for me to post about something working but read on anyway.
This afternoon I woke up and booted up my computer (ThinkPad SL500, Nvidia 9300M GS) and everything was apparently as usual. I log in to KDE to be greeted with an alert that HDA Intel (Conextant Digital) is no longer available.
I investigate this in System Settings - Multimedia and behold; I have myself a brand new HDA Intel, NVIDIA HDMI (HDMI Digital Output)
aplay -l backs me up on this:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
Subdevices: 0/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: Conexant Digital [Conexant Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 3: NVIDIA HDMI [NVIDIA HDMI]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0This device never worked before, the device 3 part was never there. No matter how much I tried I couldn't find the secret to getting the bloody thing to work. Recent updates didn't touch ALSA or the kernel so I have no idea why is suddenly recognised today.
A module that wasn't there before is also loaded up called snd_hda_codec_nvhdmi
I also discovered there are also many more related modules in /lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/kernel/sound/pci/hda which may hopefully help others with Nvidia/Intel/ATI integrated graphics cards work with their Intel HDA.
I tested it our and it worked for real. Now I'm actually worried that it will stop working if I reboot it.
Has anyone else had similar weirdness or can't get similar hardware working?

I have an HP DV2700 w/ Intel HDA audio and an Nvidia 8400M. Never did get HDMI audio working. I tried inserting that module, but nothing new:
$ aplay -l
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: CONEXANT Analog [CONEXANT Analog]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: Conexant Digital [Conexant Digital]
Subdevices: 1/1
Subdevice #0: subdevice #0And by the way, what is the Conexant Digital device supposed to do or be? I always figured that was the HDMI output.

I'm the type to fling myself headlong through the magical wardrobe, and then incinerate the ornate mahogany portal behind me with a Molotov cocktail.

I had the same weirdness, but Nividia HDMI appeared in "aplay -l" on 1st January. I also have Nivida 9300m.

A little more information on what Intel HDA actually is at Wikipedia
My computer still has HDMI recognised, but KDE still popped up some notification. It was gone before I could get a proper look, but I think it said the Analog one wasn't working correctly and falling back to HDMI. Analog is working fine though. I will help run any commands that may help in finding what exactly is happening to fix it, but I don't know what to do exactly.
