On 19th Feb there was an admin mistake by pruning the major forums. The intent from my side was to remove unanswered posts discussed in topic "Purge (old) unanswered posts" but pruning deletes posts as per an entered range not what I thought.

Fortunately apeiro keeps a daily backup so all removed posts where restored. But the backup was dated at 19th we lost one day of posts and registrations. I am very sorry for this loss.

Oops! I'm glad you posted this. It was weird since I was in the middle of a post, hit preview, got an error, then went back and a day's posts seemed missing.
It happens. No worries man. Just this morning I was cleaning out my "/tmp" directory as root. Unfortunately, I typed:
rm -rf /
I couldn't figure out why it was taking so long...

right - i wouldn't mind so much except for the fact that i spent ages yesterday putting togther a thread of all my stuff
of course accidents happen but can you check for a recent backup before you do anything risky next time?

Hey rasat, by the way, I don't know if this problem I just discovered is related, but I cannot use the BBCode "buttons" or alt+<key> shortcuts to embed that code in the text anymore. I have to manually type out the embedded BBcode.

I did a similar nasty not too far back. It was a bit subtler..
I was trying to remove all the . files in the root user dir.
rm -rf .*
It merrily travelled back up the dir heirarchy (../) and....
PS. Is it just me, or is the forum bahaving much faster than it has in recent weeks?

It works for me. Moreover the restoring was full not a partial.... the configure is same as at 19th. But if more complains, I will look into the matter.... if I am still the co-admin

Oops! Nevermind rasat. My fault. I just figured out what it was after reading your post. I just read an article on /. about "return of the pop ups", and I recently disabled my javascript. My stupid mistake...sorry about that.

doh
someone passed me a great find | rm command in the #bash irc room - i ran it as user fortunately, it ate a good protion of my home dir but if i had run it as root then /etc would have been the first to go - i keep backups of /etc on an unmounted partition now

glad to see im not the only ass doing "rm -rf /" by mistake... and even "mkfs.ext2 -F /dev/sda1" once... oh, human stupidity...

Rasat, that's a very unfortunate outcome for what would have been some useful pruning.
Have you worked out what you need to do in order to perform a successful purge without the nasty side-effects? Is there a test phpBB somewhere in which you can experiment on before committing changes to the Arch BB?
Keep up the good work.

I was just thinking about what happend to some of my posts... If only I could remember what I was posting about :-) (something about udev, vim, ... ?) Well, nothing really I can do about it so no need to worry ;-)
About accidental delete: I think you can use libtrash to prevent it.
EDIT: The "bright side" (as in Monthy Python's Life of Brian) is that I don't have to spend half of the day to browse forums

I was worried about that. I had only posted one other time in the Arch forum and to my suprise my second post disapeared!
As a newbie to the boards, I thought someone didn't like my post. It wasn't a flame of anything, just a little off topic.
It's nice to know that it's not a normal occurance and that I didn't post anything incorrectly.

What kind of avatar is that sudman1? I can't quite figure it out. It looks like something from "Seargeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band".
Most people's avatars aren't so subtle, like that dude "cypher" from the matrix running around here. Man, everytime I run across his posts, I think of "red meat".

God knows what it is - but if it was going to be anything related to The Beatles then it have been more likely to occur on the Yellow Submarine animated movie, rather than Sgt Pepper. Of course, it has nothing to do with neither, but by writing this somewhat pointless reply, I am simply procrastinating so that I don't have to get on with my work...

I suppose it does. But who cares about post counts?!
If I wanted to increase it, I'd fire off a ton of useless polls in Off Topic... What's your favourite colour? What's the weather like where you live? etc

and we'll call you REHCRA! :-D

I don't think I've been an Arch user long enough to get that :?
Offline
sorry... I'm out of place here anyway.

I have heard of Rechra, but I still don't get it. Perhaps it was something during his previous life as vicious. I take it this guy just posted for the sake of posting. Anyway, that's another post pour moi. (Kidding!)

yeah... check off topic for the most off topic posts.
Don't worry, post all you like, you won't catch up to me. I'm the master thread-hijacker...

Ah, just wait until I finish this phpbb mod for rasat. I'll add some sneaky SQL in there to bump up my post count +5000!! Or, reset yours back to 0. muhahahaha
Or maybe not... (i'm a nice guy really)
Offline
yeah, reset it to 0, that'd be awesome. I could pretend to be a newbie and sneak up on people with my hidden knowledge.... instead of pretending to be an expert and sneaking up on people with my inane off-topic posts... hmmm.
