Hey there, been using arch on my Desktop for quite a while, just installed it on my netbook and I can't seem to get a module loaded up for scaling.
I know I need the Powernow-K8 module, i was using a custom compiled kernel when I had Ubuntu running on it, got it from a person that had the same netbook.
Also 3d acceleration is terrible compared to when I was running ubuntu 9.10. specs are
AMD Athlon™ 64 single-core processor L110
AMD M690E Chipset
ATI Radeon™ X1270 Graphics
The Netbook gets 3 hours or so on the out of the box install of Vista it came with, only getting an hour or so on Arch and the fan is running constantly.

Have you checked here: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Laptop
and if you use open source ati driver you will have no power management for video card.
Offline
Yeah i tried loading modules and everything, but it keeps saying they don't exist.
Also it's impossible me to use anything but the opensource driver, I can't use the legacy catalyst with the version of xorg i have

what does
ls /lib/modules/*/kernel/arch/*/kernel/cpu/cpufreq
say?
if you need powermanagement for videocard you can downgrade xorg to 1.6.x

gx-suspmod.ko powernow-k6.ko speedstep-lib.ko
Would you recommend downgrading xorg? it is a netbook, so anything to save me power will be well worth it if it doesn't break my system

So what does
sudo modprobe powernow-k8
say?
you will get better battery time if you downgrade xorg and install catalyst. There are posts in this forum describing how.

For the moment I will focus on the scaling. Plus the opensource drivers are getting better all the time and will probably get powermanagement soon

looks like your cpu has no powernow (googled and saw this on a forum) so you might be out of luck but you should try and confirm this.

I used this modification shown in this thread and it worked fine

Ok, I see from those links that there is a patch for kernel26-git so it seems like you will be diving into compiling and patching kernel26-git. Its in aur and you will need to modify the pkgbuild to include your patch.
Offline
Would I be able to do that with Yaourt?
Offline
yep.
yaourt kernel26-git
but you will need to manually add your patch

K this goes beyond my expertise, how would I go about adding the patch and where would I get it from (sorry for the stupid questions)
Offline
never done this myself, but i would first get the patch from here
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showpos … tcount=217
you will have to do some searching and asking to go from there..
