USB not turning off at shutdown

I think this may be an ACPI problem, although i havent been running acpid until just today (didnt know it existed.. heh)..

when i shut down the computer.. my usb remains on, ie my usb optical mouse remains on after the computer is powered down

im not sure what to do, i thought it may be a `wake on usb' option somewhere, but a cat of /proc/acpi/wakeup reveals this

this isnt a bios setting as windows doesnt do this..

its getting a bit annoying powering down and then having to start up and manually turn it off at the power button to get rid of the usb

i've been looking for turning off usb devices for a long while and i've found that nobody stops them.

VIA chipset?
I have a mainboard with SiS745 chipset and 2 onboard ports and an additional VIA USB 2.0 controller. Whenever I reboot or shutdown, I get error messages about not being able to shut down a port.

Sorry guys, id forgotten about this post.

I have an NForce 3 250 chipset.

My usb mouse is the device not turning off. The optical LED remains on even with the computer off.
This only happens after a shutdown from linux.

My usb mouse is the device not turning off. The optical LED remains on even with the computer off.

I have the same chipset on a MSI K8N Neo Platinum (AMD64 cpu). Not only does the USB mouse not turn off, when I press the Num lock key on the keyboard the light comes on. Pressing Caps lock has no effect though. For me the problem exists in both Windoze and Arch.

I have a Gigabyte motherboard with also has a  nForce3 250 chipset. My mouse also stays on after shutdown, but i always unplug it (plugd it in a front usb port).

Some motherboards keep power to the perphrials (I can't spell ) at all times. My computer does this, and I know several others that do. There's nothing to worry about really, the LED in a mouse takes so little power that a watch battery could run it for quite a while.

My Gigabyte Nforce2 mobo with 2.6 kernel also keeps the power on USB. But if I shutdown the thing from the bios then the power on USB is turned off, so it can be done. It's just not annoying enough to bother fixing yet.

ok, usb in linux never turn off. They just can get umounted. It is supposed that devices must not fail if they get unplugged though they are powered, because a system can allways fail or home power suplly can get interrupted.

my usb devices now power off.. i dont think i did anything to `fix' it..
i have however upgraded my kernel since then, from 2.6.9 to 2.6.11.7
and a few -Syu's

nothing!
like i said in my last post, it does it automatically now.. im not sure what fixed it.. but its allll good now!
sorry im not much help for anyone else who has the `problem'.. but all i can suggest is upgrading your kernel and if that doesnt fix it, do an -Syu

Any news on this?

Rebooting to Windows every time just to shutdown is annoying to say the least. Every other way of shutting down does deactive the usb devices, only when shutting down from Linux do they stay on.

Wouldn't it just be easier to cut power to the power supply? And it'd save more power as well ;-)

I don't see how. Since, normally, everything shuts down nicely so nothing is using power anymore. Except maybe a led or two on the motherboard. Anyway, I don't consider that a solution. Thanks anyway though.
