Experience with new ATI 5000 series?

Hello :-)

Does anybody use one of the new ATI Cards (Juniper -Chip?) under Linux and would share his/her experience with the proprietary drivers? I'm especially interested if Eyefinity already works under Linux.
Besides some (impressive) release-tech-demos ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6Vf8R_gOec ) I couldn't find any useful information about it.

Thanks in advance

EDIT:
Currently I'm using a nvidia card and I read/heard lots of "rumors" about incompatibility with newest versions of xorg, and other problems regarding the proprietary ATI driver. What is your opinion about the future of catalyst? Any chance that AMD will wake up and provide an up to date and working driver?

Re: Experience with new ATI 5000 series?

Hi!

Right at the moment, both - the proprietary (I didn't try 9.12 yet) and the open-source drivers - just don't work so well. The proprietary driver has some problems with Multi-Display support and lacks stability (as always wink) and the open-source driver doesn't even support the HD5000 Series. I think, we have to wait. Currently, I wouldn't recommend trying out the HD5000 Series and espacially not, if you've got used to the Nvidia drivers. I tried it out (8800GTS -> HD5870) , and it sucked sad.

Thanks for your reply! It's sad that AMD obviously doesn't want to sell their cards to Linux users.

Re: Experience with new ATI 5000 series?

Hi again! I tried out the new Catalyst 9.12 drivers on a freshly new install, but almost nothing changed since 9.11. You still have to mess up with old XOrg versions and there is still a buggy multi-monitor support. However, the Windows drivers seem to be almost as crappy as the linux drivers, since the installer doesn't work, if you have installed some updates (for example upgrading Visual C++ Red. 2005 -> 2008). Those ATi Devs are so old fashioned smile. Can't wait for properly working drivers by RadeonHD.

I have a 5770 and works surprisingly very well and stable with catalyst 9.12 hotfix, kwin effects are ok. But it really sucks that you have to stay with xserver 1.6.

At this moment open source drivers doesn´t work with 5xxx but things may change in a few weeks.
