Quitting X or calling another tty causes monitor out of range error

i just installed arch and x.  configured x for the xf86-video-radeonhd driver and boot into xterm.  x starts fine and i get a small xterm in the upper left corner of the monitor.  however, when i quit x, the monitor reports that the computer input is invalid (because it's not 1920x1200 @ 60Hz).

monitor is a dell 2407WFP using a vga cable (i know, i know. dvi is on the way).

odd thing is that the console displays fine if i don't boot into x.  it just won't return to the same mode upon x quitting.

edit: switching tty from within x or switching after quitting x causes the same problem.  i have to blindly reboot after this.
