If I run vlc I get an error that looks like this:
main libvlc error: cannot open config file (/root/.config/vlc/vlcrc): Permission denied
and if I run chromium I get this:
Check failed: PathService::Get(chrom::DIR_USER_DATA, &user_data_dir). Must be able to get user data directory!
I know I am logged in as my non-root user and my home directory is set at the correct location (/home/nonRootUsernameHere/)

I had this problem when I had 'ck-launch-seesion' in my xinitrc. Everything went all right after I took it out, started X, closed X, added it again and started X up again.
