ALSA issues after yesterday's updates

Hello,

I'm running Arch with KDE, 64 bit. I usually use an external USB soundcard by Creative. After yesterday's updates (including the latest kernel), I've noticed a new kind of a problem involving the USB sound card and ALSA:

The problem applies to all audio really. For instance, I might be watching a video on VLC and the USB sound card would work fine; then I might exit the program and go to, say, Youtube to watch the video and get only the internal audio of the laptop. Or I might have been watching a Youtube video and left the browser on after the video ended, and then some other thing requiring audio wouldn't work with the USB soundcard. Disconnection of the sound card's cable is needed, sometimes several, sometimes even computer reboot, before the USB sound card function is restored. The card is set as default sound card with asoundconf, and also set as preferred device in system settings > multimedia (the USB sound card stays as active here when the aforementioned problem happens). Before the updates the USB sound card and ALSA were working seamlessly.

Could someone give me some advice as to how to go about finding out what's going wrong with the audio? It's obviously some kind of a conflict issue, but I wouldn't want to go about blacklisting the laptop's internal sound card's modules, because I need them for Skype and the like.

Thanks in advance for any help.
