I can't boot arch after routine update . Every times I tried to boot arch the system said"reboot required: the system will be rebooted automatically in 15 seconds" after the checking file system step finished,then the system forced to reboot.

then boot with live cd
mount your harddrive
and check pacman.conf

to fix your problem change root (chroot)
and downgrade to the old packages, they should be in
/var/cache/pacman/pkg

It's /var/log/pacman.log you will need to check to see what was updated, not pacman.conf.

You have file system errors which fsck doesn't correct automatically. Boot into a live disk or an OS on another partition and run fsck manually to correct the errors.
We'll need more info about your partition setup and the exact error message to give you the exact command you'll need to run.

I am not sure whether it is due to update. Maybe it is file system checking problem,as I sew "failed" above the "reboot required" message

I'v tried " fsck -a /dev/sda4" but without luck.

I have to try downgrade ,but how to downgrade packages with live cd?any tutorials?

If you are sure it's not a file system (or even a hardware) problem then try downgrading the relevant packages following the advice above.

Not meaning to hijack your thread in any way whatsoever - but I can say I have this problem too. It's not the first time btw. I think last time I had this irritating problem a few forced file system checks fixed it. Back then it was my server, now it's my laptop.

That does not mean I'm liking it though... Maybe I should take the opportunity to move from ext3 to ext4 .

i have the same problem.
Root and Home are Reiserfs filesystems. The Computer seems to halt when it comes to another ext3 disk.

For starting I ' ll try the suggested disk check, because i can't really say which package to blame.
(I'm suspecting one of the "xxxutils" or "xxxprogs" file system packages. but to be honest I'm more than clueless)

UPDATE: As a quick workaround I disabled all non-vital partitions (means: only home and root are active) in /etc/fstab. As said before: home and root are reiserfs - filesystem. After this I'm able again to do a normal boot.
The suggestion to perform several "fsck's" didn't work out for me. Neither ext3 nor reiserfs partitions had any errors.

Now I think "dosfstools" could be the package which is to blame. I had in my fstab a entry which allowed me to automount my portable mp3 player (in msc mode). Maybe installing the package empowers the boot up process to check for the device (although its set in fstab to "noauto"). But these are just random thoughts.
Maybe I should also mention that there are two ntfs partitions and I installed "ntfsprogs" but they don't seem to be the source of my trouble.
I didn't really needed "dosfstools" (like "ntfsprogs" cause of gparted) so getting rid of it wouldn't hurt me. But I'm not a fan of "shots into the dark" (if you know what I mean?).
Summery:
Got back a more or less working system but still clueless.

Can someone help me out if this is really the "troublemaker" ?

This problem has been solved. My method is following

Used live cd to edit fstab to umount the /dev/sda4 (Home folder), rebooted the Arch,then the system was boot successfully,I log in as root,opened terminal,use fsck command to check and fix /dev/sda4, after that, edited the fstab file to mount /dev/sda4 again，then restart computer, I can "kiss" again！
