Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

Looks like an unrelated bug to me but the Xorg guys will know better than me :/

My friend is in the process of regression testing, so probably we'll soon know which release introduced the bug. That should help.
(I'd do the regression testing myself, but it happens too rarely to me - I'd need months to rule out statistical fluctuations)

[Edit]
Ohh, that greeter log looks relevant indeed.

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

If you want to fix the symptoms you can try to downgrade xorg-server to 1.7.2. That seems to be the result of the regression test for the moment.
You can obtain it from the Arch Rollback Machine, for example (careful with the architecture):

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

Thanks a bunch, onety.

I downgraded to xorg-server-1.7.2-2-x86_64. I'll let you guys know if I experience the problem again.

Aaand he experienced the bug again. So that's not the solution, apparently. Though it took much longer :(

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

I installed Arch yesterday (my first Arch....) and had exactly the same prob with Xfce4/NVidia FX5200/173.xx-driver. I could solve the prob: in etc/hosts you find the "localhost" line. I changed this line to
127.0.0.1   myhost.localdomain     myhost

<reboot>

Everything is running fine now. No freezings, uptime: over 24 hours. Do I need my Debain partition anymore? Don't know...:D

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

Hmm. I don't think that's a valid solution. This seems to be a problem with Xorg/GDM, not network services.

Also, it says in the beginner's guide here:
http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Beg … tc.2Fhosts

It specifically says you need to preserve that line for program compatibility.
So if your computer's name is Archhost, you _need_ to have the following:
127.0.0.1   localhost.localdomain   localhost Archhost

OK, so downgrading broke my webcam driver, so I had to return to the current version of xorg. :-(

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

Probably it was just a statistical fluctuation for jens57 - these bugs are extremely tricky that way. I've been fooled too many times in the past (and each time I took special care to be sure).

youjh: Sorry to hear that, but apparently it wouldn't really have helped anyway.

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

@youjh

I know, it's a rather ugly solution and maybe it works for me only coincidently. But fact is I had the problem and I didn't change anything but the line in /etc/hosts. Well, time will tell. When the system starts to behave strangely I'll change the line back to normal.

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

damn, downgrading to xorg-server-1.7.1-1 and xf86-input-evdev-2.3.0-1 has no effect, the bug still comes hmm

I wonder if you are using mousegestures, too, maybe there is a correlation.

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

I don't use mouse gestures, but I do have a multi-touch trackpad that I have been unable to get to work properly. Maybe there is contention between Xorg and HAL over the driver?

it seems disabling mouse gestures is the only way, to make this bug go away 0_o

Yeah, I still have it as well. How do I disable mouse gestures? I don't think that I even have it...

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

He means the global mouse gesture system in KDE. As you're a Gnome user this probably isn't running for you.
It probably causes the bug to be triggered more often because it grabs and ungrabs the mouse every time you press for example the right mouse button (depends on how it's configured).

[Edit]
To make myself clear, it only grabs the one specific mouse button, not any other parts of the mouse. Also, the last code release that changed something (KDE 4.3.0) was back in July, IIRC. It can't actually be a bug in this code.

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

Ah. So that prolly isn't the reason for my crashes. ;-)

Anything else that could be common between a gnome and KDE machine we can try reverting / disabling?

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

Tough question. I don't know enough about the inner workings of X.
If I was testing it myself I'd probably have a look at the inputproto and libxi packages because... well, they're input-related. But honestly, I don't think they're on the right layer of the input stack.

Personally, I haven't seen the bug happening for more than 10 days :/

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

I run debian unstable on my Macbook Pro 5,5... and I am encountering this same random input freezing sad
Using openbox, on Nvidia proprietry driver, with two monitors (twinview). Its freezing almost instantly (completely unusable)

The issue for me is resolved completely upon reverting to debian's Xorg 7.4 packages, instead of the current 7.5.
Changelogs mention way that inputs are handled has changed in 7.5, and there are many bug reports saying other random problems like this.

It is really annoying me that I cannot upgrade Xorg to the latest version!

Re: Strange Xorg / Gnome Freeze with NVidia

I have had same problem as well.

Now that I think of it, problems started appearing when I started using built-in gestures(KDE). Earlier I have used Firefox plugin for gestures in browser. I have now I disabled gestures to see if that makes any difference.
